Kyiv court places Putin's "godfather" Viktor Medvedchuk under house arrest in treason case

The Pechersk District Court of Kyiv has ordered house arrest for Verkhovna Rada deputy Viktor Medvedchuk, who is accused of treason.

The investigation asked to assign Medvedchuk a preventive measure in the form of detention and to leave him the right to be released on bail of 300 million hryvnia (10.8 million dollars).

• Viktor Medvedchuk is considered the most influential pro-Russian politician in Ukraine. He leads the party "Opposition Platform - For Life" and is also called "Putin's godfather" in the media.
• On May 11, searches were conducted at Medvedchuk and his associate Taras Kozak. At the same time, the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine charged both politicians with treason. They are suspected of attempting to steal natural resources, disclosing state secrets to Russian special services, and anti-Ukrainian activities.
• In 2019, a case of treason was already opened against Medvedchuk, but it was ultimately closed.
