Andrey Shmarov steps down as editor-in-chief of Vedomosti. This was reported by the publication itself.
On May 20, Irina Kazmina, who previously held the post of Deputy General Director for Editorial Development of JSC Business News Media, was appointed acting Editor-in-Chief. “We thank Andrey Shmarov for the work done and wish him good luck in all future endeavors,” said Ivan Eremin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Business News Media.
Vedomosti clarified that the decision to terminate Shmarov's employment contract was made by agreement of the parties. The reasons for his departure from the post are not reported.
Shmarov was appointed acting editor-in-chief of Vedomosti in April 2020, after it became known that the previous owners intended to sell the publication. On May 29, 2020, the publication was acquired by JSC Support, after which the board of directors of BNM approved Shmarov as editor-in-chief.
At this time, a conflict began in the editorial office of Vedomosti, when the sale of the publication began to be discussed. Shmarov, among other things, forbade the journalists of the publication to publish any texts based on polls by the Levada Center * and criticize the amendments to the Constitution on zeroing out the presidential terms of Vladimir Putin. He also obliged him to coordinate materials with him, with the exception of advertising and news. Some of the journalists left the publication, some of them subsequently created their own publication VTimes**.
