Part One. Investigation of how friends of the Piotrovsky family built a business around the Hermitage
Olga Churakova, with the participation of Roman Badanin and other authors of Project, May 19, 2021

When the popular TV presenter Ivan Urgant invited Mikhail Piotrovsky to his evening show, he introduced the guest simply: “The director of the best museum of the world, one of the most influential people in St. Petersburg.” Urgant did not forget to advertise Piotrovsky’s book, also with a simple name - “My Hermitage”. When asked whether the book had other options for the name, the director replied: “Of course not.”
Among them are masterpieces such as “Madonna Benoit” by Leonardo da Vinci, “Return of the Prodigal Son” Rembrandt, “Dance” by Henri Matisse and, of course, the famous collection of Scythian gold on December 31, 2019.

Hermitage - probably the main museum of Russia. And its director is one of the most influential people in Russian culture. This status allows Piotrovsky to combine many years of support for Vladimir Putin with moderate freedom-he publicly defended modern art from the conservative public, Isaac's Cathedral from the Russian Orthodox Church, and the European University in St. Petersburg from Rosobrnadzor.
The scientist-East-Owl Piotrovsky headed the Hermitage in 1992. By that time, his wife Irina, also an orientalist, had already worked at the St. Petersburg City Hall, in the committee on external relations. Her boss there was the vice-mayor of the city Vladimir Putin. “I worked with Putin for six years. We started together when he gained a team. The most difficult years, when there was bread in the city for five days ... We were so spinning, madly. <...> Putin himself gained people - there was a strong, good team. A person creates his environment, ”Piotrovskaya told about working with Putin. Mentioning the difficult years, Piotrovskaya refers to the 1991 food crisis. Putin’s participation in saving the city from hunger - issuing licenses for barter with Western firms - subsequently became the subject of deputy and journalistic investigations. The issuance of licenses to dubious firms that received an inflated commission from the sale of raw materials in the West was caused by one of the first corruption scandals associated with Putin - this was told by former People's Deputy of Russia Marina Salier.

Work with Putin could help the career of the whole Piotrovsky family. Back in the 90s, the daughter of Mikhail and Irina Piotrovsky Maria, another orientalist in the famous family, became a trader in the St. Petersburg branch of Dresdner Bank. Now Maria, in her own words, does not work at the bank - she focused on charitable activities. For many years, Maria has been married to Igor Revva, who held the post of deputy minister of economic development under Alexei Ulyukaev and Maxim Oreshkin. She described the history of her employment as follows: “In 1993, it became very difficult to engage in oriental studies. And at that moment, I learned from friends that two banks were opening - Crédit Lyonnais and Dresdner Bank. Why did they take me? We, graduates of the Eastern Faculty, were young, aggressive in a good sense of the word, and even spoke languages. ” It is known that the bank came to Russia with the efforts of Matthias Varnig, a former agent of Stasi and a close friend of Putin. It was Putin as the head of the Committee on External Relations that issued Varnig permission to open the Dresdner representation in St. Petersburg.

The Piotrovsky family has a son-Boris, an economist by education, who this year unexpectedly became the vice-governor of St. Petersburg in culture and sports. From his official biography - although there are some achievements in the field of culture - it is not completely clear what he was doing at the time of appointment to the state post. Three interlocutors from among the Hermitage employees in a conversation with the “project” retell the version that is the version among the staff that in the future Piotrovsky Jr. supposedly inherit the director of the director, just as Mikhail himself once received his position from his father, the famous Soviet archaeologist and again orientalist Boris Piotrovsky. In addition, two interlocutors close to the administration of St. Petersburg are also inclined. In the meantime, the youngest of the Piotrovsky dynasty inherited from his father at least his business partners.
Among the Leningrad intelligentsia, the continuity of generations is not uncommon. In Soviet times, a family of geologists Victor and Lilia Gaskelbergs lived in the city. In the 70s, both studied the Kola Peninsula: Victor was the main geologist of the Murmansk exploration expedition, and Lilia collected a reference collection of rocks for the museum of the same expedition. Their sons - Leonid and Eugene - were engaged in other fossils - antiques, which was then called the "oil of St. Petersburg," by the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Even then, Gaskelbergs had useful acquaintances among cultural figures and museum workers, which included Mikhail Piotrovsky, say two sources of “Project”. The press service of the Hermitage refused to comment on the fact of the director of the Gaskelberg. Moreover, one of the Gaskelbergs brothers-Leonid-in the 80s-from 1983 to 1993 with a break in the mid-80s, even worked in the Hermitage, in the co-stroke department, told Gaskelberg’s colleague, confirming his words with documents about their collaboration. Later, the Hermitage, in his response to the request of the “Project”, called Leonid Gaskelberg “an employee of the museum sector for receiving and sending exhibits and moving exhibition equipment”.
In the 90s, many rumors went around the Hermitage, the most popular of which about the possible sale of works of art from the museum stores in the black market. “The museum then sucked a paw, but there were a lot of good things, do you understand what this means-good things?”, The businessman describes that time, well familiar with the influential figures of criminal Petersburg. After the departure of Boris Piotrovsky in 1990, the director of the director was occupied by his former deputy Vitaly Suslov in 1990. In the press, he was accused of intention to transfer the right to use the Hermitage collection and his symbols to doubt firms, and was also accused of supporting the antiquar and authoritative businessman Ilya Traber.

And on the eve of the entry of Mikhail Piotrovsky, a thief monologue in the Law of Yuri Alekseev, nicknamed Gorbaty, was published, where he claimed that items from the Hermitage storehouse were sold abroad, and half of the paintings in the exhibition of the museum - supposedly fakes were published.
Rumors about the trade in Hermitage Treasures were not born from scratch. Much of this can be told by the biography of the famous Leningrad "Antique" Mikhail Monastyrsky. Monastyrsky, also known as Misha-Millionaire, worked as a restorer in the 70s in the 70s. He created a whole group that released fakes under Faberge and sold them to the west. As a result, the monastery served for smuggling, but in the 90s he became a wealthy antiquele, traded icons. His works are now stored in museum funds. It was considered one of the leaders of the Tambov criminal group: in the late 90s he became a deputy of the State Duma from the LDPR, and after graduating from deputy powers he fled to Spain and died in 2006, telling the Spanish police about ties with bandits shortly before the death of the Spanish.
In a documentary dedicated to his 75th anniversary, Mikhail Piotrovsky recalled the nineties as a gloomy time, when the Hermitage was twisted with conflicts of “predators”, and “foreign comrades” himself proposed to sell certain museum values. Piotrovsky mentioned the pool that flew out the window, after which he went with guard for some time. The interlocutor of the “project”, close to the Petersburg criminal world of those years, recalls that Piotrovsky had a dispute with the people of Traber, but the director defended the intercession of another authoritative businessman of that time - Konstantin “Mogila” Yakovlev.
However, scandals with the advent of Piotrovsky did not stop. In 1999, the check of the Accounts Chamber discovered significant shortcomings when accounting for items: more than 220 thousand items were listed for non -working keepers (mostly dead). The auditors asked to present 50 random items from this list, but only three were found for them. According to the results of the audit, no action was taken, “because the leadership of the Hermitage was under the auspices of the highest level managers,” the then deputy chairman of the account of the account of the account of the account, Yuri Boldyrev, apparently referring to the good relations of Piotrovsky with Boris Yeltsin. After the audit, the director of the Hermitage claimed that all the things from the list of the Accounts Chamber are on the spot. In 2006, a large -scale theft was disclosed in the museum - almost 221 monuments of jewelry and icon -painting art were discovered, which accused the custodian who died right during the audit. Investigators did not exclude that some of the objects could disappear back in the 90s.
Nevertheless, the reputation of Piotrovsky after all these incidents was not affected. “The Hermitage is the patrimony of Piotrovsky, only he steers there, and even the Ministry of Culture was never allowed there with his ideas,” recalls the former high -ranking official of the St. Petersburg government.
When Mikhail Piotrovsky took office, the Kommersant newspaper reported that he accepted his appointment “with surprise”, promising to make his main task “attracting funds to finance the Hermitage - primarily by organizing commercial exhibitions”.
In the same 1992, a company was founded, whose tasks included packaging and transportation of Hermitage exhibits to exhibitions. It was called the HEPR LLP, and its founders were the Hermitage and the same Leonid Gaskelberg, an employee of the museum of the museum, a friend of the director of Piotrovsky, recalls Gaskelberg's colleague. From the audit of the Accounts Chamber it follows that Gaskelberg was the owner of HEPRI at least in 1999. Next year, this company began to engage in customs clearance of works of art.
“HEPR” was created on the basis of the service museum that had already existed, and it was the museum’s employees who became the core of the company's state. However, then it turns out that in 1999, the Hermitage left among the owners of the HEPR.
. The Hermitage then could not present a contract of sale of a share in the company. Thus, a former Hermitage employee and the director of the director privatized the museum service,
Although now the official e -mail of the company is on the domain of the Hermitage itself. Commenting on the history of HEPI in response to a request from the “project”, the Hermitage claims that the LLP was really created with the participation of the museum and was formalized by the order of Piotrovsky, but from 1996 to 1999 it was at the liquidation stage, and after 1999, the museum was not related to the company.
“Taking into account the nature of the publications of the network publication“ Project ”...” - the full text of the response of the State Hermitage to the request of “Project” dated May 18, 2021 ↓
Dear Sirs!
The project “Project” is not a means of the media in the understanding of the law of December 27, 1991 No. 2124-1 “On the media” due to the lack of registration: to recognize the information site by the network publication, it is necessary to register as the media in the manner prescribed by Art. 8-11 of the Media Law.
A person who actually carries out journalistic activities for a publication not registered as the media, the response to a request can be given only in the order of the Federal Law of 02.05.2006 N 59-ФЗ “On the procedure for considering appeals of citizens of the Russian Federation” with the deadline for consideration of such a request within 30 days.
When analyzing your message, which looks like a summary plan of interrogation, we divided its content into several categories:
Request for information in public access, in particular regarding the activities of business entities. The specified information is contained in official reference services - the answers to these questions are obvious and objective, and do not at all concern the state Hermitage. By virtue of this fact, the Hermitage ignores them.
Request for information about the private life of a person (for example, the circumstances and time of acquaintance with anyone). By virtue of Art. 23 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, everyone has the right to inviolability of private life, personal and family secrets, protection of their honor and a good name. Article 24 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation states that the collection, storage, use and dissemination of information about the private life of a person without his consent is not allowed - consider that such consent has not been obtained.
A request for comments of rumors and gossip-the state Hermitage is not ready to comment on the spread of rumors under the guise of reliable messages about someone or something.
Request for information on the facts of economic activity of the Hermitage itself. We will limit ourselves to the answers to this part of the request:
To ensure and technical support of the museum exhibition process when moving exhibits to temporary exhibitions and to solve other transport and logistics tasks of the museum in November 1992, LLP “HEPRA” was created (with the participation of the state Hermitage).
The initiative group, which made the idea of creating the HEPR LLP, included employees of the museum, in particular, the then head of the sector for receiving and sending exhibits and moving the exhibition equipment A.P. Samoilov, as well as an employee of the sector L.V. Gaskelberg and A. V. Dzherikhov.
The founding of the Hermitage was drawn up by order on the state Hermitage, signed by its director M. B. Piotrovsky.
A limited liability partnership as a type of economic organization created by agreement of legal or individuals by combining their deposits in monetary or natural form actually existed until 1996. LLP finally ceased to exist in 1999 on the basis of Federal Law N 14-FZ “On Limited Liability Companies”
In 1996, the leadership of HEPR LLP decided to terminate the company's activities. Since 1996, LLP has entered the process of official liquidation, which was completed by 1999.
Since 1999, the Hermitage left the founders of the company on the basis of an order signed by the director of the Hermitage M. B. Piotrovsky, with a return of the constituent contribution of 4 (four) rubles.
In June 1996, a new legal entity was registered without the participation of the State Hermitage - LLC Khopr, which continued the activities of HEPR LLP, not being a successor.
Taking into account the nature of the publications of the network publication “Project” as a whole, there is no doubt that when writing “Notes on the Museum Business”, the main goal of the “Project” is the discrediting of the leadership of the museum and its partners, the formation of negative associative connections between the image of the museum and significant values for the audience.
In the case of publication in the publication of information that is not true, deliberately distorted and/or incorrectly interpreted, state Hermitage, reserves the right to protect their impaired interests and business reputation by any ways mentioned in the law.
Sincerely,
The press service of the State Hermitage

Over almost 30 years of existence, the company has changed several names: HEPRI, HEPRI-PLUS, and finally now-Khopri LLC. Over the past years, Khepr has been entrenched in its status of the most important contractor of the museum and a major player in the market for transporting works of art. According to the calculations of Project, from 2012 to 2018, the Hermitage purchased services from the company for 205 million rubles.

Another publisher’s co -founder Alexander Shif is the owner of the Profit company, which supplies the Hermitage Office. Over the past ten years, the museum has concluded contracts with a chief company for 336 million rubles.
However, that’s not all.
