Twitter resumes account verification after three years

The social network stopped issuing ticks after the profile of an ultra-right activist was confirmed.

You can apply for a “tick” from May 20, according to the Twitter blog.

The company said it launched a new policy with clearer user verification criteria and began removing checkmarks from profiles that do not comply with the updated rules. They aim to encourage respectful communication.

Today's call for applications marks the next milestone in our plans to bring greater transparency, trust, and clarity to Twitter verification.

According to the new rules, representatives of one of six categories will be able to confirm their account:

• government;
• companies, brands and organizations;
  
• news agencies and journalists;
• entertainment;
• sports and games;
• activists, organizers and other public figures.

The company plans to expand the list by the end of the year to include scientists and religious leaders.

In November 2020, the social network published a draft of a new account verification policy and asked users to comment on it. In two weeks, the company collected 22 thousand reviews.

Twitter suspended its verification system in November 2017 after moderators approved the account of a far-right activist. Then many verified users criticized the social network, mistaking the “tick” as a sign of approval of the company.
