On May 23, the Belarusian authorities detained the founder and former editor-in-chief of the Telegram channel of NEXTA Roman Protasevich in Minsk. For this, the aircraft of the Ryanair airline, at which the journalist flew from Athens to Vilnius, urgently put in the capital of Belarus allegedly due to a message about his mining. The official Belorussian media “BelTA” reported that Lukashenko personally ordered the MiG-29 fighter to take the air to the air to support the Ryanair aircraft. The official representatives of Lithuania, Belgium, Germany, Austria and the European Union demanded the liberation of all passengers and explanations in connection with this situation. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Moravetsky turned to the chairman of the European Council Charles Michel with a request to consider the issue of imposing sanctions against the Belarusian authorities in connection with this incident. As in social networks they reacted to the actions of the Belarusian authorities - in the 7x7 review.
Nexta Telegram channel was actively covered by protest promotions in Belarus after re-electing Alexander Lukashenko in August 2020 for the next presidential term. In September 2020, Roman Protasevich left the post of chief editor of the channel. In October 2020, the Court of the Central District of Minsk recognized the Telegram channel and its logo with extremist materials. In November 2020, the Investigative Committee of Belarus opened criminal cases against Protasevich under several articles: 293 of the Criminal Code (“Mass riots”), 342 Criminal Code (“Organization and preparation of actions that grossly violating public order, or active participation in them”) and 130 Criminal Code (“Fruitment of racial, national, religious or other social enmity or growth”). The journalist also fell into the list of organizations and individuals involved in terrorist activities, compiled by the KGB of Belarus. Protasevich later put on the interstate wanted list.
President of the Center for Development of Regional Policy Ilya Grashchenko recalled that in Belarus Protasevich could face punishment up to the death penalty:
- It is very similar that the owner of Nexta was specially lured on a flight flying over Belarus. In this case, it is obvious that even the sky can no longer be safe for the opposition. And Lukashenko now has his own Navalny, whom he can accuse of trying to overthrow the constitutional system, and in Belarus for this - the death penalty.
A journalist from Moscow Roman Popkov recalled that Lukashenko was not the first time piracy on passenger airlines:
- In January 2020, the plane of the Belavia airline, which followed the Minsk -Munich flight, suddenly turned over the territory of Poland, went back to Belarus and was planted in Grodno. The security forces climbed aboard, read a number of names and brought six to eight people out of the cabin. The rest of the passengers flew to Munich with a delay of almost eight hours. The incident on board was explained by the aircraft commander "problems." Then Lukashenko admitted that he ordered the aircraft to return to Belarus: he hunted for corruption by directors of sugar factories.
Political scientist from Moscow Boris Kagarlitsky saw in the actions of the authorities of Belarus a new level of lawlessness:
- If in order to detain one oppositionist - the founder of the NEXTA channel Roman Protasevich, the authorities decided on this, then this means that they are not only legal norms, but no rational boundaries recognize. Or just never heard about them. The incident that the act of international terrorism and air piracy cannot be described. And if someone believes that Belarus “by several moves” is ahead of Russia, then such a lag can only be happy.

According to the head of the Internet publication It's My City, a journalist from Yekaterinburg Dmitry Korzev , what happened will go down in the history of world dictatorships:
- If Lukashenko really not only falsely reported a bomb, but also lifted fighters into the air to force a plane with his personal enemy in Minsk, then this is literally a military attack on a civil liner.
The politician and ally of Alexei Navalny Leonid Volkov believes that such a trick Lukashenko will remain unpunished:
- Alexander Lukashenko is an international terrorist. In general, of course, the correct, legal, proportional and adequate response of the international community would be to send a special forces detachment for the delivery of a mustachioed nits to the Hague. But the times are not the same, it will be limited to “acute concern” ... This is a huge problem regarding Lukashenko, Putin and other madmen. The whole world speaks of "red lines." And the more he says (and only says), the more terrorists see that there are no “red lines”, alas,.
Journalist Andrei Loshak asks not to forget that the only country in Europe that supports Lukashenko - Russia, therefore, the Russians are responsible for what happened:
- Our president hugs with a cannibal and allocates billions of dollars to him, without which he might have already sat in the isolation at the surroundings. Unfortunately for Belarusians, victory is impossible without a change in power not only in their native country, but also in the former metropolis. And the future of Belarusians directly depends on what future we will choose. Such is additional responsibility.
Political consultant from Moscow Gleb Pavlovsky believes that after this one from Lukashenko you can wait for anything:
- Not only is Luke a clinical psycho, he is now in addition an international pirate. Who knows where else to suffer a fool? There are few persuasions alone.
Political scientist from Yekaterinburg Fedor Krasheninnikov is glad that everything did not turn into an even greater tragedy:
-It’s good, of course, that idiot Lukashenko did not shoot down planes with the opposition on board, but for some reason it seems that this is not far off if this idiot is not stopped.
The correspondent of the Russia-24 television channel Stanislav Natanzon did not see any terrorism in the actions of the Belarusian authorities:
- No, well, the most powerful aviation terrorism - it was the forced landing of the President of Bolivia Evo Morales in Austria and the Shmona on the presidential plane, since the United States decided that Edward Snowden on board. Once again: NATO countries forced the plane of the president of the sovereign state to sit down, they obscured him as a criminal. Morales himself at this time put on a sofa to wait. Compared to this, a special operation to detain the creator of NEXTA is just a small regional incident.
The Columonist of the RT channel Maxim Kononenko was surprised at the public reactions to the actions of the Belarusian authorities:
- The Americans abduct other people's citizens around the world. Belarus detained its citizen. We look at the reaction of progressive humanity.
The military correspondent of the Komsomolskaya Pravda, Alexander Kotz, recalled that the previously similar situation was provoked by Turkey authorities:
- The question of “state terrorism” can still recall how in 2012 the fighters of the Turkish Air Force forced the Syrian passenger aircraft, which took a flight from Moscow to Damascus, to land at Ankara airport. The airliner was planted due to suspicion that weapons may be on board.
According to the journalist Alexei Pivovarov , Lukashenko managed that the Ukrainian authorities failed earlier:
- And remember last year’s story, when - even before the elections - a detachment of the "Wagnerians" was detained in Belarus? Then it turned out that the Ukrainian special services were developing an operation to arrest them: it was planned when they flew further from Minsk to Europe, put a flight aircraft in Ukrainian territory. That operation, as you know, broke. It turns out that Lukashenko and Protasevich did.

RT editor Margarita Simonyan admired the act of the Belarusian authorities:
“I never thought that I would at least envy Belarus.” But now I’m somehow envious. The Old Man performed beautifully.
Journalist Ksenia Sobchak joked at the post by Simonyan:
- Margarita Simonovna knows that each next meme after Raphael [refers to the post of Simonyan with the assumption that no one had poisoned Navalny, and his blood sugar just dropped sharply] should be stronger than the previous one.
Politician and journalist Maxim Shevchenko was surprised at Simonyan’s such short -sighted reaction:
- That is, now any planes can be planted and pulled out of them who you want? Margo Simonyan welcomes this? But for a long row of her friends and acquaintances flying on business houses over the EU territory, this may have fatal consequences. Some of them are wanted in the USA and the EU.
Religious and public figure Andrei Kuraev believes that Lukashenko convicted the editor -in -chief of RT with her fasting:
- Thus, she denied the version of a random fight on board, which allegedly led to the compulsory landing of the aircraft in Minsk and to the arrest of the dissident flying on it. I agree with Margarita and RT: this is a special operation committed by order of the president. The remaining qualifications will be given by the court. Not Minsk.
President of the St. Petersburg Politics Foundation Mikhail Vinogradov is not sure that such a trick Lukashenko will affect warming in the relationship of Moscow and Minsk:
- Everyone writes that Lukashenko is now a friend of Russia forever: Europe will run into him, but Moscow will not support, of course (still should not be supported by the brains publicly), but will remain silent. And after that, the integration and the great geopolitical axis “Moscow -Minsk” will finally begin. But there is one but. Lukashenko - the president is already nearly 27 years old. All these years he drove the Gestapo by the nose, discussing a lot about integration and sabotting it even more. All these 27 years experts said that Belarus has nowhere to go, the economy is dependent on loans, no one is waiting in the West and great friendship is programmed. But even in more hopeless situations, Lukashenko managed to get out of these friendly embrace to dodge. So far, it is not obvious that this time something has changed dramatically.
According to the blogger from Moscow, Kirill Shuliki , Lukashenko could go “along the path of Gaddafi” for several reasons:
- The first version: that he is in a medical sense crazy. The second version: that he still leaves, but wants to deal with enemies before that. Three version: he raises bets before negotiations with Putin, they say, I'm mental, give money. The fourth version: he begins to build a besieged fortress and simply wants Belarus to be closed to Western airlines. Most likely, there are symbiosis versions one, three and four.

Director of the Center for Political Conjuncture Alexei Chesnakov believes that Lukashenko sharply raised the bets in the game:
- It is not clear whether he has a real opportunity to pay on all accounts that are attached to these bets or will now be attached?
The host of the Komsomolskaya Pravda radio Sergey Mardan noticed that the Ryanair incident occurred on the eve of Putin and Biden:
- Alexander Grigoryevich - Anyone, just not a crazy idiot. The main question is who convinced him to take the seizure of a civilian aircraft right now. What did you promise? Or what threatened?
The head of the Institute of Political Research Sergei Markov considers the Belarusian incident as a possible Biden check for decisiveness:
- Everyone is used to what the Americans do what they want. And now, if it is confirmed that this is a special operation of Belarusian special services, it turns out that Lukashenko behaves like Americans. And this is a shock to everyone. "Who is it, which behaves as a power having?" - asks the whole world about Lukashenko in the style of Dostoevsky. The United States should now show everyone that this is allowed only to him, the owners of the world. Otherwise, the shock of the foundations. And this is, perhaps, a test from Russia for Bayden. In view of the Biden and Putin summit. Which now, perhaps, will not take place.
