A Voronezh student sued a million rubles from the Ministry of Internal Affairs after being tortured with a bag of ammonia at the police department

The Central District Court of Voronezh recovered from the Ministry of Internal Affairs one million rubles in compensation for moral damage in favor of student Maxim Grebenyuk, who was tortured with a bag of ammonia by the police. The human rights organization “Zone of Law” reported this to Mediazona.

As lawyer Sergei Loktev, who collaborates with human rights activists, explained, the court partially satisfied the claims - the student asked to recover 4 million rubles from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

“Mediazona” spoke in detail about this case. Students Grebenyuk and Sergei Troyansky said that in May 2018 they were called to the police department to testify about the theft of an iPhone from their friend. According to Grebenyuk, security officials Sergei Kosyanenko and Oleg Sokolovsky “were not interested in the circumstances” of the theft, they wanted to obtain confessions.

One of the policemen put a plastic bag over their friends’ heads, into which they had previously poured ammonia, the students recalled. His colleague stepped on the chain of handcuffs fastened on the wrists of Grebenyuk and Troyansky. As a result, under torture, the students confessed.

In 2019, the Kominternovsky District Court of Voronezh sentenced Kosyanenko and Sokolovsky to three years and two months in a general regime colony and three years in prison. They were found guilty of exceeding official powers with the use of violence and special means (points “a”, “b” of Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code).
