The American aerospace company Lockheed Martin and the General Motors auto producer announced a joint project to create an electric lunar rover for the Artemis ("Artemis" program), within the framework of which NASA plans to land astronauts on the moon in the coming years after a long break.
According to New Atlas , the lunar carpin, called Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV), will be able to transport two astronauts or deliver cargo in autonomous mode. Judging by the short animation video, the lunar rover will have an open cabin - it will be possible to ride in it only in the lunar spacesuit, as on the rovers used by NASA in the expeditions of the Apollo program. The technical characteristics of the LTV have not yet been disclosed.
It is assumed that new generation rovers will be able to solve various problems and will be actively used in unmanned mode. Requirements for the new lunoper provide for the possibility of operation at temperatures from -162 to +138 degrees Celsius. Also, the systems of the new lunar can be resistant to radiation.
Note that the Japanese automaker Toyota is also working on the creation of the lunar canal. Together with the Japanese Aerospace Research Agency (JAXA), the company is developing a lunar car with a sealed cabin of 13 cubic meters, in which people can be without spacesuits. The concept of the concept said that the lunar car will be designed for two astronauts, but if necessary, can transport four. Its length will be 6 meters, width - 5.2 meters, and height - 3.8 meters. The stock of its course was originally estimated at 10 thousand kilometers, but now we are talking about 1 thousand kilometers, and if the car had a wheel on the first renders, now the creators suggest that it will move along the surface of the moon with jumps due to low gravity.
In 2020, it became known about JAXA plans to create a hydrogen factory on the moon, which will be used as a fuel for a promising lunar car.
