Russian President of the Russian Hockey Federation Vladislav Tretyak demanded from the Russian national team victory over the Swedish team at the group stage of the World Cup in order to “punish” the Scandinavians with a non-infection in the playoffs of the planet’s championship.
On Saturday, the Russians achieved the fourth victory at the group stage, having overcome the Switzerland team with a score of 4: 1. The Russian team will play with the Swedes on Monday.
“It is also necessary to punish the Swedes so that they do not get anywhere. You must be beaten up,” RIA Novosti quotes the Tretyaka.
“However, the Swedes, and Belarusians, and everyone else needs to be won, and there it will be like a map. Today, in order to become a world champion, you need to beat everyone, otherwise there will be no chances for gold medals,” the head of the FHR added.
After five rounds, the Russian national team scored 12 points and takes second place in the group A, yielding to Slovakia in personal meetings. At the preliminary stage of the domestic ice squad, it remains to play on May 31 with Sweden and June 1 with Belarus. Four best teams of each of the groups enter the playoffs.
If Valery Bragin’s wards take at least one point in the remaining two matches, then they will become unattainable for the Swedes and provide themselves with a place in the playoffs, regardless of the results of other teams.
It should be noted that for some modern sports functionaries, the ice confrontations of Russia and Sweden for some reason still cause associations with the military operations of Peter's times, namely with the Battle of Poltava .
