The publication notes that the clouds in a thin Martian atmosphere are not often formed - usually their formation occurs in the equatorial zone in the coldest season. At the same time, in the last Martian year (two earthly years ago), researchers noticed clouds that were formed earlier than expected. This time, Curiosity was ready to observe and was able to remove these clouds in mid-March with the help of his color and black and white chambers.
Judging by the images sent, these clouds were formed above ordinary Martian clouds, which are formed at an altitude of about 60 kilometers from the surface of Mars. And if ordinary clouds are formed from water ice, then removed by the roller, apparently, consisted of dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide).

NASA added that the cloud pictures were taken immediately after sunset - the last rays of the sun fell on ice crystals, of which clouds consist, creating that the clouds glow against the backdrop of the darkening sky. Similar clouds are occasionally observed on Earth and are called silver clouds .
