The French writer for the first time became the winner of the International Buker Prize. He will share the cash prize with the translator

Russian writer Maria Stepanova entered the short list of the award.

The winner of the award receives 50 thousand pounds (more than 5.1 million rubles). The award will be divided in half, noting the equal recognition of the author and translator in the creation of the work. This is stated on the Prize website.

David Diop wrote his novel by Frère d''Me (“Runned Soul”) in French. Anna Moskovakis translated into English, the book was published under the name AT Night All Blood is Black (“All Blood Blood at night”).

Diop became the first French author to receive a reward. He was born in Paris, grew up in Senegal, and now lives in France, where he teaches literature of the 18th century at the University of Poe. “At night, all blood is black” is his second novel. The main character of the book is the young Senegalese, who fought for France on the Western Front during the First World War.

The chairman of the jury noted that all six books that fell into the short list of the prize were "absolutely standing." Among them was the Russian writer Maria Stepanova with the book “Memory of Memory”. Earlier, only two Russian writers nominated for the international booker: Lyudmila Ulitskaya in 2009 for the book “Daniel Stein, Translator” and Vladimir Sorokin in 2013 for the “Oprichnik Day”.

The International Buker Prize was established in 2004, until 2016 it was awarded once every two years. Now - annually. The winner may be the author of any book that was translated into English and published in the UK or Ireland.
