I must admit that we in the journal Technology quite rarely pay attention to problems with access to sites. Facebook, for example, falls every month, you will not surprise anyone. However, today there was a truly large failure-in the middle of the day, dozens of largest sites around the world began to give a mistake 503.
First, users ceased to open Amazon, Twitch, Reddit, PayPal, Vimeo, Ebay, Github, Twitter. Then it turned out that dozens of news publications do not work, including CNN, The New York Times, The Guardian, Financial Times, Verge.
British government sites were also affected. Citizens of the country could not extend their passports, apply for tax benefits or receive a driver’s license.
The reason for the failure is a malfunction of the Fastly cloud platform, which serves a huge number of companies on the Internet. Sites are used primarily to storage of images. The company has already begun investigation of "potential impact on the performance of CDN services."
