Putin allowed residents of Crimea and Sevastopol with Ukrainian citizenship to hold state and municipal positions

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law allowing residents of Crimea and Sevastopol, who due to circumstances were unable to renounce Ukrainian citizenship, to fill state and municipal positions. The document was published on the official Internet portal of legal information.

It allows people who have submitted an application to the Ministry of Internal Affairs to renounce Ukrainian citizenship and who do not have other citizenship to be recognized as equal in rights with Russian citizens, including filling the above positions. People who, at the time of the referendum, were minor children of Crimeans and were not on the peninsula, upon reaching the age of 18, can also apply to renounce Ukrainian citizenship.

At the same time, those who received citizenship before the referendum on March 18, 2014 must confirm that they lived in Crimea or Sevastopol at the time of the referendum.

In late April, Putin signed laws prohibiting state and municipal employees from having dual citizenship. This ban appeared in the Constitution after the amendments adopted last summer.
