
According to the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat), the natural population decline compared to 2019 in some Russian regions has grown ten times, and on average more than doubled in Russia. Rosstat drew attention to RBC.
So in St. Petersburg, the natural decline of the population (excess of mortality over birth rate) increased by 47 times - from 308 people in 2019 to 17,948 people in 2020. In Tatarstan in 2020, 12,981 people were natural decrease - this is 72 times more compared to 2019, when the population decline, according to official figures, amounted to 180 people. RBC notes that the data of Tatarstan are strongly knocked out of the statistics of the remaining Volga regions, where the average growth coefficient of natural population loss did not exceed 2.5.
Moscow, according to Rosstat, became a leader in an absolute decrease in the population. In 2019, the population of the capital grew by more than 16 thousand people, and in 2020 it decreased by almost 25 thousand.
Last year, Russia came in first place in general and excess mortality among large developed countries. In December 2020, a record number of citizens in its entire history (243 thousand people) died in the country, except for the Second World War. Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova confirmed that 81 percent of deaths is associated with Covid-19 or complications after it.
Rosstat updated statistics who died from the Covid-19 in 2020. According to new data, from April to December last year, 144,691 people died from coronavirus infection in Russia. This is 38 percent more than previous indicators (104.8 thousand dead).
