Russian banks will be able to connect Mir cards from October 26, 2021 to the contactless payment service Google Pay. This was reported with reference to the bulletin of the payment system by the Izvestia newspaper. After that, credit organizations will be able to connect their cards to the system and android users will have the opportunity to pay for purchases using the phone without using the card itself. So far, only users of VISA and MasterCard payment systems can pay in this way.
Rosselkhozbank, ICD has already informed reporters that they intend to connect contactless payments to Mir cards until the end of 2021. At the same time, Sberus, Mail Bank, VTB, Rosbank said they intended to do this among the first.
It is noteworthy that since the end of April, banks can connect their Mir cards to the Apple Pay service so that iPhone users can make contactless payment, however, according to Izvestia, not a single bank has yet connected this option. What exactly the reason for such a delay was not specified in credit organizations.
At the same time, through some services, it is already possible to carry out contactless payment by Mir cards. In particular, such a function is available in the Samsung Pay service, as well as through a separate application of the MIR Pay payment system. The first to make such payments were connected by Rosselkhozbank, Center-Invest, SMP Bank, Russia, Ubr, Moscow Credit Bank and Promsvyazbank.
According to Skolkovo, the Mir payment system is now the most popular in Russia. At least half of the country's residents have such a map, and for 42% of citizens this system is the main one. This is due to the fact that almost all social payments are charged specifically on Mir cards. However, according to data for 2020, the share of Mir cards in the total volume of domestic operations is 24%. The rest is divided by Visa and Mastercard.
