Russian hackers from the Nobelium group attacked companies, institutions and users from 36 countries. This was reported to Microsoft.
Almost half of the attacks (45%), according to the company, occurred in the United States. Some of them also go to the UK, Germany and Canada. Mostly IT companies (57%) and government structures (20%) were attacked.
At the same time, according to Microsoft, most of the hacking attempts by Nobelium were unsuccessful. The company is aware of only three successful attacks, and sent warnings to the affected structures.
Microsoft also found malware on the device of one of its employees. The company stressed that they quickly responded to this and secured the device.
At the end of May, Microsoft accused Nobelium of attacking US government agencies. According to company vice president Tom Burt, the attackers targeted 3,000 email accounts at more than 150 organizations. A quarter of the organizations attacked are linked to international development, humanitarian aid and human rights work.
