News digest for July 5

A suspended sentence for a defendant in the “palace case”, threats to a former employee of Navalny’s headquarters and persecution of minors due to the January protests. We talk about the main news for July 5th.

• The court found the defendant in the “palace case” from Krasnoyarsk guilty. He was sentenced to two years probation for the article on the use of violence against a government official at the rally on January 23. The man allegedly sprayed a gas canister in the face of the police.
• Former FBK operator Pavel Zelensky was transported from the pre-trial detention center in an unknown direction. In April, he was sentenced to two years in prison under the article on calls for extremism on the Internet; in June, the appeal court reduced the sentence by a month.
• Former governor of the Khabarovsk Territory Sergei Furgal has had his preventive measure extended - he will remain under arrest for another three months. The politician complains about the heat and stuffiness in the detention center; correspondence is delivered to him with a delay.
• The investigation asks to drop the case of a 17-year-old resident of Rostov-on-Don, who is charged with an article about calls for mass riots. According to the prosecution, the minor posted images and a video message on VKontakte, “which contained calls to participate in mass riots on January 23” in connection with a rally in support of Alexei Navalny.
• The court upheld the claim of former employee of the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexei Kasyan against the Investigative Committee. In it, the scientist demanded compensation for items lost after the search and seizure. The searches at Kasyan's place were carried out in connection with a case of inciting hatred or enmity, opened in 2018 due to publications in LiveJournal.
• In Kemerovo, police detained the former coordinator of Navalny’s local headquarters, Stas Kalinichenko, and blogger Mikhail Alferov. Presumably, this is due to the arrival of Vladimir Putin in the city. Kalinichenko was arrested for 10 days.
• Unknown people left the inscription “RUN” on the car of Andrey Fateev, a former employee of Navalny’s Tomsk headquarters. At the moment, the activist is a deputy of the city council.
• The court dismissed the case brought against Pavel Khokhlov, a participant in the January protests. He was accused under the “Dada” article because of the rally in support of Alexei Navalny on January 23.
