The government has determined the rules for choosing search engines on new devices according to the law on Russian software

In 2021, Yandex was chosen as the default search engine; for 2022, the government may choose another one.

Manufacturers will be able to choose one of three options:

• The Russian search engine is installed by default in the pre-installed browser with the ability to change the settings.
• A selection window offering several search engines appears when you first start the device.
• The selection window appears when you launch preinstalled browsers for the first time.

It is proposed to extend the requirements for the use of the Russian search engine to “certain types of technically complex goods,” the document says. We are talking about devices released after July 1, 2021.

In 2021, Yandex is the default search engine. to The Ministry of Digital Development clarified TASS that the government will begin choosing a search system for 2022 from August 1. At the same time, the user will be able to change the search system to another at any time, the department added.

• The law on the pre-installation of Russian applications on devices before sale in Russia by Vladimir Putin came into force on April 1. According to it, manufacturers of smartphones, tablets, laptops and TVs with Smart TVs must offer applications from Russian developers to customers in Russia.
• In December 2020, the government approved a list of applications for pre-installation. It will be updated annually.
