Lithuania will spend 42 million euros on a wall on the border with Belarus

Lithuania intends to allocate 42 million euros to strengthen the border with Belarus. This was announced in an interview with Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland by Lithuanian Ambassador to Germany Ramunas Misyulis.

The money will go both to build a new border wall, announced in early July, and to improve the surveillance system.

The diplomat stressed that Lithuania considers the influx of illegal migrants from Belarus "hybrid aggression" against the entire European Union, since most of the defectors, in his words, "want not to Lithuania, but to Germany or Sweden."

• The start of construction of a new barrier on the border with Belarus against the backdrop of a sharp increase in the activity of illegal migrants was announced on July 9. The length of the wall will be about 30 kilometers.
• The European Union refused to finance the construction of the wall, but said they were ready to provide Lithuania with "financial assistance for border management."
• Since the beginning of 2021, more than 1,400 illegal migrants have entered Lithuania from Belarus, mainly from the Middle East and Africa (for the entire 2020, there were less than a hundred such cases). In May, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that the country's authorities would not interfere with the transit of illegal immigrants to Europe.
