Google was fined 500 million euros in France

The French antitrust regulator fined Google €500 million. The company does not pay the media, but uses their headlines and article snippets in the Google News aggregator, the verdict says.

The fine was imposed because Google failed to comply with several court orders issued last year, the regulator said in a statement. By law, the company was required to enter into an agreement with the media to pay for the placement of their content in Google News.

The complaint was filed by major French publications, including the oldest news agency AFP (Agence France-Presse). AFP noted that Google was fined for refusing to "negotiate in good faith with media companies" for compensation.

In the next two months, Google should present a plan for how it intends to respect the interests of the media. Otherwise, the IT giant faces fines of up to €900,000 for each day of delay. The company expressed regret over the decision of the regulator, but will comply with its requirements.
