In the Kurgan region, employees of the regional department of the FSB, Center “E” and the National Guard conducted more than 30 searches of followers of Jehovah’s Witnesses. This was reported by the press service of the regional department of the Investigative Committee.
Three followers of Jehovah's Witnesses were detained in Shadrinsk and Kurgan; according to investigators, they led local communities. Criminal cases were opened against the detainees for organizing the activities of an extremist organization (Part 1 of Article 282.2 of the Criminal Code).
As the department said in a statement, after the organization was banned, believers held meetings in different places and communicated through “foreign electronic platforms and instant messengers,” “fearing exposure.”
In 2017, the Supreme Court declared the Jehovah's Witnesses organization extremist and banned its activities in Russia. After this, hundreds of believers were persecuted.
