Vladimir Putin introduced a bill to the State Duma that allows him to independently determine the maximum age for military service for senior officers of the Russian army. The document was published in the electronic database of the lower house of parliament.

The explanatory note states that in some cases there is a need to extend the contract with the “most experienced” and “highly qualified” military personnel with the rank of marshal, army general, and fleet admiral, even after they reach the age limit.

According to current laws, the age limit for military service is 65 or 70 years, depending on rank. Now there are no marshals in Russia, and there are more than ten army generals in military service, including Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu (66 years old), Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov (65 years old), Deputy Defense Minister Dmitry Bulgakov (66 years old), head of the Russian Guard Viktor Zolotov (67 years old) and FSB head Alexander Bortnikov (69 years old).
