“The Chinese have an indisputable sense of measurement and architecture, but with regard to food, they completely lose it. Sitting at the table, they eat to the dump ... It's all about false standards of hospitality, ”writes the famous Chinese writer Lin Yuytan (1895–1976) in his book“ Chinese: my country and my people ”.
Despite the fact that from the moment of this encyclopedia of Chinese life, intended for the Western reader, almost 100 years have passed (published in 1935), the remark about the gluttony of the Middle Kingdom has not lost its relevance today. In this regard, in April 2021 in China, a unique “ law on the fight against food waste ” was adopted for world practice, introducing a number of curious restrictions, like a ban on video bloggers to overtake on camera or order too many dishes during a banquet. And although the famous expression of Saltykov-Shchedrin “The severity of Russian laws is softened by the inanimacy of their implementation” applicable to Chinese reality (which is the same Lyn Yuitan more than once), over the past months, several things have already started some food waste, which indicates the seriousness of the intentions of the Chinese leadership.
