In October 2012, activists freed 12 people who were kept in slavery in a grocery store in Golyanovo: men and women from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan forced to work for free, beat and forced sex. All Russian media wrote about this story - but the owners of the store were not condemned, and in 2016, a girl who was kept in labor slavery again fled from their grocery. Five years ago, several victims filed a complaint with the ECHR, but they had not yet waited for any result. “Cold” spoke with 42-year-old Bakia Kasimova, who spent 10 years in the store in Golyanovo and gave birth to two children about how she fell into slavery and how she experiences its consequences.
A friend in Moscow offered a job in Moscow. It was 2002, I worked at customs as a mediator in Chernyaevka ( the most popular border point between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. - approx. "Cold" ). For example, someone has a lot of bags with you, they could tell us: "Close through customs, I will give a thousand tenge." The work that is, then no: you can get from three to ten thousand rubles per day - then it was a lot of money - and in the rest of the days there will be no work.
I was born in the Tashkent region in Uzbekistan - we have such a village there as a collective farm. The family has eight children, I'm the eldest. After school, she studied at a medical school for three years, but there was no particular interest in medicine, so I did not work by profession. At the age of 20, she got married, a daughter was born a year later, but our family did not take place, I lived at home with my parents. And now, when my daughter was already a year and a half, I met in Chernyaevka accidentally with a childhood friend. It turned out that her husband is familiar with the mistress of stores in Moscow, who is looking for girls to work by sellers. “You will work at the checkout, they will pay $ 500 per month.” I calculated how much it will be with our money, and I went crazy. I thought: I’ll work for a year or two and buy an apartment here. She told her parents, they discouraged: “Do not go, why do you need? You don't know anyone there. ” And I did not listen, I was young.
Two girls and I went to the mistress of the store Zhansul Istanbekova to Shymkent in Kazakhstan - she had to choose who would work. I was tall, still thin, beautiful, I was 25 years old. And they are low. When I looked at us, she chose me - she needed beautiful girls at the cash register. She is also beautiful, well -groomed, high, her approach was to everyone. I thought: what a good hostess looks like that, so neglected. The girls were sent home, and I stayed. On November 25, 2002, we were already in Moscow. On the platform, we were met by Saken Muzdybaev - the right hand of Zhansulu, he took us to the store for Novosibirsk, 11. And the next day I was sent to another store on Parkova, 15.
Zhansulu did not warn us that we would live in the store. In Shymkent, she said that we would be settled in the apartment, asked not to take extra things - they say, "I myself will buy all your clothes." Therefore, I did not take bags - only a couple of underwear, a couple of sweaters, trousers. When we arrived, Zhansulu took a passport from us, explained that they would make registration. The next time I saw him only after 10 years.
The first year she worked in a store and slept in a warehouse, but at the beginning there were no bullying. I noticed that the girl was working with me, and her nails were gnawed - this happens when they are nervous. I asked her: “Why do you have it?” And she says: "You will work as I work, it will also be so and will be worse." I didn't understand. And she, it turns out, worked for three years and already knew everything.
A year later, we were transported to work in another store - 11 on Novosibirsk, and there it began: I began to beat Zhansulu. Every evening we were collected together, put two or three bottles of vodka and said to drink. You say: “I don’t drink” - so you will be immediately forced to drink a complete glass without a snack. It was impossible to refuse. And the food was like this: you cook two or three potatoes in the pan, onion, if there is something from the delay, you put everything there. I can’t see vodka now. For ten years, I almost never went outside, we moved only inside the store. In winter, they went out into the street to remove the snow, and in the summer they swept at the entrance, but this is five to ten minutes a day.
In a new place, Zhansul constantly warned us: you will steal money from the box office - I will beat the foil with fingers on the fingers. You will not sell the goods or want to run away - the Zhansulu will take him to the forest, they will rape and bury alive. She always reminded us of this, and I didn’t even have such thoughts [about the escape] - so I was afraid, it was like hypnosis. It happens, you want to leave, get together, set yourself up, go to it, but the tongue is numb, the words do not come out. Zhansulu immediately felt why you were going, immediately found each approach: they say, "we will sit in the evening, it will be, such."
There were more guys in one store, and we had more girls. And so we were forced to have sex with each other. True, I was not very forced, I said that I did not want to, and Zhansulu was enough. But if one of them wanted to sleep. So I became pregnant, and gave birth to a daughter in 2003.

While I was pregnant, I said to Zhansulu: “You will give birth to a girl, you will give it to me. I don’t have my daughter, but how will you feed her in such conditions, wear it? I'll take care of her about her. ” Every day she twisted me with this, and even if there was no opportunity to leave the child, I still hoped that the muzzle of the boy and it would be possible to leave him. So once my fights started at night, I was taken to the hospital. It turned out to be a girl. Two days later, I left the hospital, Zhansulu designed the child for herself, as if she had given birth to herself. Probably, I gave money to the employees of the hospital so that they would not ask questions, I do not know. I already spent the third night after childbirth in the store, and on the fourth day I started work.
For six months, my daughter Camilla lived with Zhansul in Golyanov, and then she sent her to Kazakhstan with her sister. After that, I did not see Camilla anymore. Already 16 years have passed, but I still do not know what was with her. Four years later, Zhansulu told me that Camilla died, but I have no evidence of this. (In the materials of the check, Zhansulu and her husband say that Camilla was born not in 2003, but in 2006, and died in 2008 from meningitis. According to her husband Zhansul, there is a death certificate from 2008. - Approx. "Cold".)
I always watch “Wait for me” and I think: what if I have the same, after 30 and 40 years, it happens that relatives are found. After our release, I tried to achieve some information about my daughter through the court, but the judge refused nine times [to initiate a criminal case]. I just want to know if my daughter is alive or not. If not, then see where she was buried.
Mom has been looking for me for 10 years. Parents turned to the police, but did not help there. They thought that I was no longer alive that I died. For the first time I was able to contact them two years after leaving. Zhansulu allowed to call mom. She said: "Don't say anything superfluous." I scored, said: “Hello, I am good”-and that’s all, the connection turned off, then Zhansul threw this SIM card. My native language Zhansul understood well: I am a Kazakhstan from Uzbekistan, and she is a Kazakhstan from Kazakhstan.
In 2007, I gave birth to another child - a boy. With his father we had nicknames ( the so -called marriage in Islamic family law. - Approx. "Cold" ). When we were forced to sleep with one of the employees, one man fell in love and said: “Let's do Nicky, we don’t have to sleep with anyone, I will live with you.” So I got married, the mullah came to hold the ceremony directly to the store. I lived with him for four months, became pregnant, and then he ran away from the store. I also offered me, but I was afraid that they would then be caught and killed. After that, I did not see him.
When Baurzhan was born, he was immediately given to the nanny, they were taken to the apartment, which was rented for children to Zhansul: two other employees had children. I was glad that the child appeared. Anyway, the dad is or not - God gives, you will love your child. But in three or four months I saw him only once. When he was small, he already wanted to crawl, but the nanny did not let him in - she tied it to the battery. At first he began to get sick with rickets, and then at the age of four it turned out that he could not walk. Nobody was engaged in them. Zhansul began to offer me: “Why do you need a disabled person? Let's take it to the orphanage and leave the door? ” I refused. Then she said: "Let's take it to the hospital, we will do one injection, and he will die." I said: "No."
When we had already been released, it turned out that he broke his leg in infancy, she had grown up incorrectly. Doctors diagnosed, said that he would live only until the age of nine. But he, thank God, has been living for 13 years. He cured rickets, he did not remember all these events, they did not take him to school - development is delayed, so he studies at the boarding school. He needs to lie in the hospital twice a year. At the age of 13, he does not know how to count and write, but talks. It happens that you tell him: “Go bring it”-he goes and forgets, something else will bring.
For those 10 years that I worked, we had two girls died. One worked, worked, and then Zhansulu took her to Kazakhstan, and she died on the train-it turned out that she had uterine cancer. We had no treatment all these years. And the second somehow guilty, she was beaten, and then Zansul decided to punish her-it was necessary to go around the store 10-20 times around. It turned out that her heart was weak, she felt bad from it. Zhansulu said to me that day: "Go to her apartment after work and look so that nothing happens." I went to bed with her, get up in the morning, look, and she already died. Zhansulu said: "No one should know anything, tell you - die." And the sister of the deceased worked with me in the store that day. I almost went crazy, I could neither cry nor smile. She was 18 or 19 years old, a young girl.
We beat us every day. I have scars everywhere. Oh, how she beat! He holds his hand, holds his leg, lie down - and beats with foil. I always walked in bruises, one blow is a bump later. It hurts here, it is pinching here. Buyers asked what happened to us, but Zhansul taught us to answer: “Husband beat, what is the difference to you?” And where did we complain?
I ran away once in 2009. That day I had a lot of Jansulu, because I did not have time to serve buyers. I went to the warehouse, and there the door was open - it was for the first time. And I ran. It was cold, and I was in leggings, flipping rubber and in a guipure turtleneck. For a week I lived on the street. At first, I slept in the entrance, the buyers of acquaintances met: who gave the jacket, who let it wash to himself, who somehow helped with food. I turned to the embassy [Uzbekistan], no one helped me there. I went to the police near the embassy, I was sent to the Golyanovo police department.
In Golyanovo, one buyer saw me. I asked her not to tell the hostess about this, she promised that she would not say, let her go home: sleep, wash, eat. And then Zhansulu asked her if she had seen me, and she said to her: “So Bakia was sitting at my place.” And once I wake up, open my eyes - and Zhansulu sits in front of me. I was in shock. I was sure that she would definitely kill me. But she said: "You forgive me." She cried, said: "I will not beat you." She was a chameleon. And where should I go? I went back. For two months, I talked with me normally with me, did not beat, and after that - again everything is as before.
I think Zhansulu is crazy. She once herself worked as we worked. She, when we drank vodka, constantly said: “Do not think, everything will not happen so, we once also worked like that: we stood in the cold.” She took revenge on us for walking along the street and frozen.
In 2012, one girl escaped from us and left for Kazakhstan. She was faster. I worked for four months, asked for a phone at some point, I got up in the place where the cameras had a blind zone-we had 30 cameras in the store-and called my mother, said: “Take me, they beat me.” A week later, her mother arrived behind her, pretended that there was nothing, Zhansulus released her. And this girl told me: "Sister, give my address, I will tell your parents." I wrote her address, and she contacted my mother. So gradually everything was moving over with us, the parents contacted another girl-Zarina, and later they somehow went to Oleg Melnikov from the Alternative and began to think through our liberation.

I remember that day: how we were waiting for journalists and volunteers went to the store, how my mother came. I was in shock. I didn’t cry, where to come from? I sobbed for ten years, I already had no tears. I remember how I sit with my mother, and Zhansulu comes up and calmly asks: “Bano, what happened?” And I am sitting with my mother and afraid that they will take me and bring me back. And now I'm not afraid of anything, I want to achieve justice. It infuriates me that I have been in slavery for ten years. If I worked in another place, I would have already had my own housing.
After this work, my nervous tick developed, I make eye injections every 5-6 months. When I am nervous, I talk or eat, my eyes are pulled inside, my eyes are closed. I will calm down a little - and then they no longer close. This is due to the fact that it was a blow. For each injection of 20-30 thousand rubles, it takes. Plus, my fingers are broken, scars on my chest, on my face, bones are all broken, hurt when the weather spoils. I also knocked out my teeth to Zhansulu, I now have prosthetic teeth. Yes, and we always worked standing-because of this, varicose veins are everywhere on the feet.
In 2012, we were released, in 2013 we were in Moscow and in the suburbs, and at the end of the year we left for their homeland. In 2014, I returned to Moscow - there was a court, I wanted to achieve justice. I found a job in another place, met a guy, gave birth to two more children. I fell in love with him, I thought that I would get out of here, I would live well. And he was married. We lived with him for three years, and then I told him: "Okay, let's part, you and your wife live." What to do? Life is such.
Now I have ended the term of the patent ( a document that gives the right to work to a foreign citizen who has arrived in Russia in an order that does not require a visa. - approx. “Cold” ). It needs to be done every month, pay 5350 rubles, also extend registration in Moscow and pay 5 thousand rubles for an apartment. This is needed for money, but for now there is no patent, I cannot work legally. Therefore, while I live with a friend in the country, I find part-time jobs: for example, someone needs to wash the dishes, get out in the dachas, they can pay a thousand and a half. There is not enough money. I have two more small ones, I left them with a nanny in Kazakhstan and I send $ 200 every month. Here I will earn 30 thousand rubles, I send 15 thousand there, and 15 here goes to a living, to Baurzhan.
What is now with the rest of the girls, I don't know. And these stores are still working. Law enforcement agencies say: there is no evidence. But living proof is ourselves. True, almost everyone, except me, wrote a refusal to testimony-I think Zhansulu paid them or offered something-and left for their homeland. I remained alone in Moscow, I have come to “civil assistance” ( an organization that has been helping migrants for almost 30 years, protecting their rights. In 2015, the Committee was included in the list of organizations performing the functions of a “foreign agent”. - Approx. “Cold” ).
Zhansul also offered my family - 60 thousand dollars. She said to her parents: "Come to Kazakhstan, I will give you." But I immediately said this to lawyers and volunteers from “civil assistance”, they guessed that she could substitute, and advised them to set the condition: let him come to Uzbekistan and transfer money. Zhansul refused. Apparently, I wanted to somehow substitute in Kazakhstan, for example, to throw drugs or something else. Why do I believe in it? They already did this: they threw up one guy who worked for us, drugs, and he was in prison for four years.
I am already used to the attention from the media. Everyone thinks - this does not happen. But I myself will not break my teeth. I am offended, I worked as a ishak, they beat me, mocked me. I want to punish them. In 2016, we and the lawyers of “civil assistance” applied to the ECHR, we are waiting for the result. Now I try to help people more, on the street, in the subway, when I see that someone has problems, I help everyone. And I think everything - suddenly my girl will come to me once and say: "You left me, so and so." I still try to find her, but it doesn’t work out. Where can I go with this? I have no money.
