Heat was felt in the air, but not because of the weather. Even in the desert of Sonor, Arizona, where several men and women gathered for a five -day self -improvement training, in October was no longer so much. Heat came from a huge canvas tent in the shape of a dome, where they invited them to go a guru, James Arthur Ray with a encouraging smile.
The construction resembled an Indian steam room - a hut in which the indigenous Americans conducted cleansing ceremonies through sweating. Under the low ceiling of the participants in the climax of the whole course, the darkness absorbed the darkness. There were no light sources in the room. Ray sat down next to the hole made in a dense canvas through which they got inside.
Most were covered with vapor as soon as they entered. The mentor ordered them to sit in two dense rows around a paired pit with hot stones dug in the middle of a pair. “It may seem to you that you are dying, but you will not die,” Ray assured . “You need to succumb to death to defeat her.” He covered the entrance with a tarp and left several dozen students unconditionally trusting him without a single source of oxygen.
The exercise began at about 14:30 on October 8, 2009. For two hours, suffocating people fell out of the steam room, rode on the ground and shouted. Many had no doubt that they were dying. Beverly Bann, a 43-year-old orthodontist from Dallas, looked at a confusedly and watched how the scene from the film about the war unfolds around. The participants in the ceremony staggered like shell-shocked, and extended their hands to at least somehow orient themselves.
A woman named Sidney lay on her side and tried to breathe, but only terrible rales were heard from her mouth. Her eyes rolled up, tears flowed down her cheeks. Beverly looked around and saw another familiar - with a blue hand, unconscious. She went on and stumbled upon a man with her head thrown back. Beverly turned him over, he breathed calmer and suddenly opened his eyes - the blood vessels burst, and the squirrels stained red. Not far from them, someone shouted that he had a heart attack.
The bann was spinning, thoughts were confused. Only after some time she realized that she could not find her friend-Kirby Brown. Beverly looked into the tent, which was already ventilated and cooled. At first, she noticed how someone makes an indirect heart massage to a man named James Shor. Then I saw that they were also trying to return to the life of Kirby next to him. The victims of the steam room turned red, foam was on the mouth.
The dumbfounded Beverly looked around and saw a few meters from the place where Shor and Brown, their guru, James Arthur Ray died. He did not try to help any of the followers. His face expressed no shock or sympathy. In the distance there was an ambulance siren. One of the paramedics who ran past asked Beverly what happened. She talked about the Indian steam room. “Guys, you are just idiots,” the doctor answered and disappeared under a tarp.
