Many people remember from childhood how grandmothers gathered a bundle for death: a suitable dress, soap, a scarf, stockings, money accumulated on the funeral. Over time, the attitude to this topic and the preparation for the completion of life changed. Irina Korneevskaya talked for “cold” with people who think about their own funerals and discuss with loved ones important details of the ceremony for them, about why they do this and how others relate to this.
The old women in the village of Lukoyanikha, Vladimir Region, prepared in advance for their death - they collected a knot with funeral equipment, money, and many even bought a coffin. Galina Bakholdina, who bought a house in the village of Lukoyanikha and moved there to live from Moscow in the 1990s, was younger than them-only recently retired.
Once, shortly after she moved there, two guys drove through the village and drove a coffin in a stroller. "They say:" Who needs a coffin? " I realized that I have time to buy this thing. Moreover, the price is similar-you need to take it, ”says 86-year-old Galina Fedorovna.
Over the next two years, she twice gave the coffin of “loan”. “Everyone knows that I have a coffin-and then suddenly someone happens to someone. They ask: "Fedorovna, give a coffin?" - "Take it." They will bury their dead man, then they buy a new coffin in return for me, ”she says. “It acted quite likely!”
In the former Old Believers, Galina Fedorovna was comfortable, and the common language with the locals, according to her, was found by himself: “I did not have to stand in front of the village people, to sit down, nor squatting, and so at once - from heart to heart.”
Prior to this, Galina Fedorovna, a livestock specialist by education, “believed in science, space”, worked at the Research Institute, read Tsiolkovsky and generally “grew up” in the Lenin library; In the village, she was conquered by the identity and look of people on the world. The locals were religious - and Galina Fedorovna also "came to the church." Elderly women in Lukoyanyan conducted a rite of the funerals of their dead friends. According to Galina Fedorovna, “there was a reader who read the popular psalms, and we sang along with the rest. It was very interesting, instructive, touching. ”
A few years later, Galina Fedorovna moved to the neighboring village of Terenino into the house more likely, where her large family - two daughters, their partners, seven grandchildren - could remain visiting the summer. “The coffin moved with me,” says Galina Fedorovna. “Well, do not leave good.” Behind the new house was a large shed, which used to contain livestock. The coffin was laid on the drying-the space under the roof of the barn, where the hay was once stored.
After a few years, the family of the youngest daughter, Catherine, bought the house from Galina Fedorovna, and she bought a smaller house in the same village - and closer to the church. And the coffin remained in the barn. “20 years have passed since then,” says Ekaterina Burlak, daughter of Galina Fedorovna. - Mom is now 86 years old. Last year I broke the barn because he began to sag and pull the house along. In short, the first thing the builders saw, the young guys breaking the shed is this coffin. Very scared. Since the coffin is new, unreliable even once, it was moved to where there was a free place - they put it on the terrak. When the youth came to hang out there - my daughter and a crowd of her boyfriends - they all settled with this coffin. What else to do with the coffin? ”
Since the coffin on the terrace does not bother anyone, the family does not plan to get rid of it. “If I enter the market with an ad for the sale of the coffin,” says Galina Fedorovna, “can you imagine the reaction of the audience?” I don’t even remember the miserable amount that I paid for him. Due to the number of past years, all this has become a plot for a feuilleton. ”
“Mom has always been philosophical about death with humor,” says Catherine. -Recently, she came to a prosthetist dentist, and he asked what tooth to make, cheaper or more expensive-plastic or cermet. Mom says: "Let's cheaper, otherwise I’ll put it expensive, I will die, and how insulting it will be."

“I have never had a long -lived manners,” says Galina Fedorovna. - It never occurred to me that I would live longer than 70 years. My grandmother died at 72, mom at 62, his dad died at 37, a stepfather who raised me and whom I called daddy died at 64. I did not think that I would live longer than my mother. ”
Now Galina Fedorovna lives in a country house in the family of the eldest daughter of Alexandra - as she says, “at this age it is desirable to be closer to her”: “I’m already looking closely, I am looking for a cemetery, where I would like to lie. I think not so much about myself as about my loved ones - so that it was not far from driving. In Terenino, where is my house, there is a temple and side by side - but from Moscow it is 400 kilometers. Now I am under Zvenigorod - from Moscow 50 and a little kilometers. I think that it would be nice here, but as God will give. And the coffin - I don’t know, maybe he has already rotted. ”
“I think if my mother is dying in Moscow - God give her many more years of life - then no one, of course, will not go to the village for this coffin,” says Ekaterina. - And if there, then it is logical that it will be used. Although, probably, you need to measure it, maybe it is no longer suitable. ”
In recent years, according to Catherine, talking about death has become ordinary for her mother: “Her favorite entertainment is to paint her property: an apartment, a house in the village, some money on an account. Periodically, she tries to attract me with her sister to these conversations. The sister reacts very painfully, and I say - Okay, as you say, your right to dispose of what you have. After all, if mom wants to talk about it, then it is important to her. ”
Catherine understands why her older sister is unpleasant to speak with her mother about death: “All her childhood was dragged through the funeral - it so happened that then there were a lot of them, and there was no one to leave the child with. And she had a childhood fear that she would be nobed to bury her. She even begged for her sister precisely in order not to remain the last in the family - she is 9 years older than me. Periodically at family celebrations, we go out on this topic, she says: "Well, you remember what your function is."
Catherine herself admits that, of course, she is afraid of death - but in general she treats this calmly. “If a mother, the most important person in life, demonstrates such a philosophical attitude to death, you also assimilate him. Of course, this is a tragedy when death occurs suddenly and a young man leaves for strength, leaving children. And if this happens already at the age of 80+, probably this is not very sad. It is important that everything is pronounced, released and forgiven, ”she says.
In religious culture, preparation for death is a natural practice, says an ethnolinguist, a researcher of Slavic folk culture Irina Sedakova: “For believers, regardless of faith, this is one of the main themes. The Orthodox have the prayer of John Damaskin “Is the Odr this coffin to me” is included in the evening rule. How many people will live and how he will die is unknown: they die both in childhood and at a young age, and some, on the contrary, “heal” - live too long and pray so that death occurs more likely. ” Since no one knows his mortal hour, a believer needs to be spiritually prepared for him - confess, take communion. Previously, in some places until the 1970s, from 45-50 years, and sometimes from youth, in villages, and in cities too, people prepared a special knot-it was called differently in different dialects, for example, “mortal clothes” or simply “mortal”. Competent people left a “sealing letter” - an order with the instructions of how and what to wear, where and how to bury.
In a specially sewn handbag, a knapsack, laundry, clothes, a savanneck or a special canvas, a scarf for a woman and other items were placed. “They tried to choose everything new, but dim, so that in the next world it would not shine and that nothing reminds of earthly life,” says Irina Sedkova. - The clothes should have been comfortable so that "nothing interferes." There were two pieces of soaps in the knot: one - for the ritual washing of the body after death, the second - as a gift to the washer. " They also laid the handkerchiefs as a gift and as a keepsake to those who came to the commemoration, shawls as a gift to those who prepared treats.

For men, the “mortal knot” more often gathered wives or (for idle, widowers) sisters. “It was a female concern - to prepare clothes for yourself and to dress your husband correctly if he dies before,” says Irina Sedkova. “Often, on expeditions, the elderly women told us that it was better for the husband to die first,” the widow would correctly equip him into the next world. ”
Many relatives of the deceased with whom the ethnolinguist communicated on expeditions talked about their dreams, when the “wrongly” buried person dreamed living, complained, and then it was necessary to “rectify the situation”. “For example, a husband suddenly died in one woman-landing woman. She was not ready for his funeral and put him in trousers that she did not have time to wash, ”says Irina Sedkova. - The husband had a dream and said: "Well, you put me in unwashed pants!" She sewed and handed out several trousers to those who needed. She never dreamed of deceased. If the deceased in a dream says that he was buried in uncomfortable shoes, the next deceased in the coffin needs to be "conveyed" for that person a comfortable couple. "
It is also important for believers before death, if possible, for health reasons, it is also important to ask for forgiveness and say goodbye to loved ones. “In Russian and other Slavic languages, the words“ farewell ”and“ forgiveness ”are the same,” says Irina Sedkova. - Before you say goodbye to eternal life, you need to ask everyone for forgiveness and forgive those who offended you. Often I had to see in the villages how people go into the house to a dying string in order to have time to "say goodbye" during his lifetime, and this connects everything: both forgiveness and farewell. "
Once, 20-year-old Irina went into the kitchen, where her mother and brother spoke. Seeing her, the mother said: "We discussed what we want to be buried." “I am: oh, what are you? - recalls Irina. - Mother said: in a gray dress in which she goes to church - beautiful and comfortable, why not, a good choice. Brother wants to be buried in the subcriminal, which remained from the time when he served in the church. I also said in response: in my beloved shirt at that time. Mother replied that this was a good choice, because it would be hard to put on a T -shirt on the dead body. ”
Parents, grandparents Irina live in a large city in Siberia. In their family (mother is now 50 years old, brother 30), the theme of death has never been taboo: "We consider it absolutely normal to think, talk about death and ask for something." Talking about this was going on, even when Ira was too small to understand everything, she vaguely remembers only excerpts: “One of my parents read the children's book“ Three Pig ”, in the figure near the wolf, saliva flowed from his mouth. I said, they say, fu, how vile it is. They answered me: "It's good that saliva is flowing, it means that he is alive." I asked: "So, when my grandmother died, her saliva did not flow from her mouth?" They said: "Well, it turns out, yes." I am such - "good, I understood, I figured it out."
Irina connects the easy attitude of her parents to death with their religiosity. Now she is 23 years old, she lives in another city and communicates little with her mother, but, although gradually the views of Irina and her relatives on faith and life dispersed, they completely share some beliefs - for example, that they need to be philosophical about death. “We discussed with the mother: why be afraid, why to be silent if this happens in any case,” says Irina. - Death is part of any life. Death will definitely come, and relatives will definitely have to do something with it. It is better to bury a person according to his considerations, with dignity completing the story than how to. Therefore, we know the requests of elderly relatives about how they want to be buried, and in the course of life we throw our own. ”
Irina recalls that she was surprised at how calmly her mother reacted to the recent death of her grandfather-she “did not go into some deep experience of grief”: “He was sick for a long time, she looked after him, knew what would happen. As he wanted, his body was transported to his native village and buried next to relatives. " Recently, Irina’s mother and 80-year-old grandmother were going to go to Moscow at the height of Pandemia. Irina dissuaded them: "I said:" You know what it can lead to. " Mother and grandmother shrugged - "Well, okay, it means that it is, it came to an end, what to do." Grandmother said that she would even be better to die in Moscow - there is closer to her native suburbs - a place where she wants to be buried. "
Irina herself for the first time seriously thought about her funeral when she was 13 years old: “I told my mother that I wanted to be cremated. She found out everything and replied that the nearest crematorium is six hours from us is not an option. He says: come up with something else, please. ” Then Ira decided that it would be ideal if the rosehip had grown on her grave: “Mother swore - the problem is that the rosehip is very arrogant, he behaves like a weed and will spread to all graves in the district. Apparently, planting rose hips will not work either. ” So far, Irina has no other ideas.
Now the girl is studying at the university at the translator and with her friends also discusses “plans for eternity”: “I told a friend:“ If you want, come to where they will bury me, play my guitar. ” And I was sincerely impressed when a couple of my friends also expressed their requests in a relaxed conversation - they asked to write an obituary and talked about what was better to put on a grave. ”

A friend of Ira, according to her, once remarked: "You plan your death better than your life." But Ira does not agree with this - she plans death as well as life and everyday affairs. “I have no clear distant plans for life, because I know that my life can turn in an unexpected direction. But death will occur in any case. But naturally, I really do not want to die. "
Reflections on their own funeral give a person a sense of control over death, says Palliative psychologist Ilya Petrikin. “In psychology, there is a theory of management of the fear of death: each person has an internal conflict between the desire to live and the awareness of the fact of his own mortality. Pronouncing reduces the anxiety and fear generated by this conflict, the person thinks: "I took care of this." In talk about death, we turn to our values, create meanings, establish relationships with loved ones. Such a conscious way to overcome the fear of death helps a person build his life. ”
Talking about death and funeral also allow you to better understand yourself and loved ones, says Petrikin. “In any dialogue, it is important that the participants hear each other. If a person comes to talk about death, and in response he gets “listen, you still live and live”, “don’t say, you are clicking”, then, of course, there is no dialogue. The desire to talk about death means that this is important for a person - and then a loved one may ask about the causes of these thoughts. If the participants are able to understand what lies behind this conversation, it will help to reveal many important topics related to life. ”
In order not to bore her conversations about the funeral of others, Irina decided to record them. “I gathered everything the main thing in one document and showed my sister, where this folder is in my laptop. My best friend knows the password from the laptop and clouds. They can easily contact each other, ”says Ira. She understands that the system invented by her is not very reliable: “Anything can happen to the laptop-suddenly I will get into an accident somewhere on the way: a laptop to meat, I’m in meat-no one to ask anyone. Yes, and there may be problems with the cloud. ” Over time, she hopes to come up with a more reliable plan.
Ira believes that the personality reflects in the plans for his own funeral: “This indicates how a person relates to death and, accordingly, life. And it seems to me that this is also about respect: to know the last will of a person and do as he wants. So that the final chord does not dissonate with the whole work. I had a friend with whom we were brutally quarreled and did not make peace. When I no longer had any influence on his life, I dreamed that he died and he was buried in the ground. Although in reality he told me three times that he wants to be cremated. In a dream, everyone collectively scored his desires and the last will. I would not want this for my loved ones. If I can do, as it would be pleased with them, I will do it. ”
In 2007, Daria R. from Moscow, which is now 31 years old, lost three close relatives in a few months and still has not survived these losses. “We have a very friendly family, everyone lived in the soul. My dad and grandmother - his mother -in -law - were the best friends. When in December dad died of cancer, it was a big blow for her, she did not survive him. Grandmother died in February, and grandfather died in April. They loved each other very much, so grandfather survived her for only a few months. "
Daria was then 17 years old, but she had to face the organization of the funeral: when her father died, her mother was in the hospital, and her grandmother was sick.
