The outgoing Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, will arrive in Moscow on August 20.

The forthcoming visit was first reported by German government spokesman Steffen Seibert, noting that Merkel's meeting with President Putin "is obviously expected."

Merkel will arrive in Moscow ahead of a scheduled August 22 meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, as well as on the anniversary of the poisoning of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

The Kremlin confirmed the meeting. “It is planned to discuss the state of and prospects for the development of bilateral cooperation in various fields, as well as to consider a number of topical international and regional issues,” the press service said in a statement.

Merkel visited Russia in May 2018 and met with Putin in Sochi. That meeting was held without concrete results (in any case, public ones), but observers did not rule out that some agreement on Nord Stream 2 was reached at it. This year, Merkel was in Moscow in January.
The new chancellor of Germany will be chosen following the results of the elections to the Bundestag, which will be held on September 26. Bloomberg wrote that Russia fears the victory of the Green party candidate Annalena Burbock.
