The Baikal Environmental Prosecutor's Office has begun an investigation due to pollution of Lake Baikal near the village of Peschanka, agency representative Natalya Ryaguzova told RIA Novosti.

“We're looking into it. It is too early to talk about the nature of the pollution. We will wait for the official results of the study of water samples, which are currently collected and sent to the laboratory,” she said.

Earlier, on August 12, the prosecutor's office began an investigation due to water pollution near Olkhon Island. Scientists at the Limnological Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences have discovered “anthropogenic pollution.” They came to the conclusion that, most likely, paint and varnish products got into the lake.
