The Moscow City Court upheld the house arrest of the person involved in the “sanitary case”

On appeal, the Moscow City Court upheld the house arrest of the defendant in the “sanitary case,” municipal deputy Dmitry Baranovsky. This was reported by lawyer Alexey Vasiliev, who collaborates with OVD-Info.

On July 21, the Preobrazhensky District Court of Moscow extended Baranovsky’s house arrest until October 6. The politician is accused of inciting violation of sanitary and epidemiological standards (Part 1 of Article 236 of the Criminal Code with the use of Part 4 of Article 33 of the Criminal Code) in connection with the rally on January 23 in support of Alexei Navalny. The judge did not take into account the guarantees provided by the defense from 12 Moscow City Duma deputies, 4 heads of municipal districts, 39 municipal deputies and 2 State Duma candidates.

• In August, some of the defendants in the “sanitary case” were sentenced: Dani Akel was given a fine of 100 thousand rubles, Lyubov Sobol and Kira Yarmysh were given a year and a half restriction of freedom, Nikolai Lyaskin was sentenced to a year of restriction of freedom, and Oleg Navalny was given a year of probation.
• The “sanitary case” was opened after the protests on January 23. According to the Moscow authorities - which cannot be verified - the protests involved two dozen people under surveillance by the Social Monitoring system due to infection or contact with coronavirus patients. Charges of inciting violation of sanitary and epidemiological rules (Part 1 of Article 236 of the Criminal Code with the application of Part 4 of Article 33 of the Criminal Code) were brought against those who, according to the investigation, called for participation in protests. Dani Akel was accused of coming to the rally on January 23, succumbing to the calls of other defendants, although he was sick with coronavirus. At the same time, according to Moscow authorities, at the end of January and beginning of February the number of new Covid cases did not increase, but on the contrary, decreased significantly.
• In connection with the detention of Alexei Navalny, a series of protests took place throughout Russia. The largest protests took place on Saturday, January 23, and Sunday, January 31. Security forces reacted harshly to the protests: on January 23, more than 4,000 people were detained, and on January 31, more than 5,500 . On the day the sentence in the Yves Rocher case was changed to a real one,arrests also took place near the Moscow City Court building, including journalists.
