Americans in Germany complain of 'Havana syndrome', first such case in NATO country

In Germany, two American officials sought medical help due to symptoms typical of "Havana syndrome," The Wall Street Journal reports.

As the publication emphasizes, these are the first cases of "Havana syndrome" recorded in a NATO country. The WSJ does not report in which structures the Americans who sought medical help work.

Similar cases have occurred in other European countries in recent times, but their names have not been specified. The WSJ's sources said some of the victims were intelligence officers or diplomats working on Russia-related issues.

• The first time that the “Havana syndrome” was encountered was in 2016 by employees of the US Embassy in Havana. Later, similar cases were recorded among diplomats in Russia, China and Uzbekistan.
• US intelligence agencies suspected that the Russian government could have been behind the attacks. Moscow categorically denies any involvement in the incidents.
