The Government of the Russian Federation has included sugar in the list of agricultural products for government interventions. The corresponding order was signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.
“Interventions are used as a tool to regulate prices and support agricultural producers. When prices are low, the state buys products from farmers for the intervention fund. In the event of a noticeable increase in prices, it sells, thereby stabilizing the situation on the market, ”the government website says.
The formation of the state intervention fund is scheduled to start in 2022.
In December 2020, Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized officials for raising food prices. He noted that the reasons for the increase in cost are not in the pandemic and not in production, but in the economy.
The increase in prices affected sugar (+71.5%), sunflower oil (+23.8%), flour (+12.9%), pasta (+10.5%) and bread (+6.3%).
After that, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed decrees on measures to stabilize food prices. Among them, in particular, the conclusion of agreements with sugar producers. Prices for sugar in wholesale were fixed at 36 rubles per kilogram, in retail - 46 rubles. The agreement was valid until June 1.
