A Sami activist was detained at a mass celebration in the Murmansk region

Police officers in the city of Monchegorsk (Murmansk region) detained the director of the Sami Heritage and Development Foundation Andrey Danilov. This is reported by Novaya Gazeta with reference to the activist himself.

On August 29, Danilov was at a mass celebration in the city center when police approached him and demanded to see the contents of his backpack. In a conversation with the publication, Danilov noted that the police did not name the grounds for the check, did not explain the status and rights of the activist, and one of the law enforcement officers did not have a badge.

As a result, the man was detained with the use of force and taken to the local police department. At the moment there is no connection with Danilov.

As Novaya Gazeta notes, Andrei Danilov is one of the participants in the confrontation between Sami activists and the Fedorovo Resources company. The conflict began after the company announced plans to mine platinum in the Fedorov tundra, sacred to the Saami people. In addition, Danilov is the director of the Saami Heritage and Development Foundation , whose activities are aimed at "preserving and developing the national culture and language of the Saami people, as well as the environment."
