In Russia, 22,498 new cases of coronavirus infection were registered over the past day, this is the maximum since the beginning of August. This is reported by the capital's operational headquarters for the fight against infection.
The day before, more than 22 thousand cases of infection were also detected in the country.
During the day, 3,275 people fell ill with COVID-19 in Moscow, 2,055 in St. Petersburg, and 1,215 in the Moscow region. The fourth and fifth places in terms of the number of cases are Samara (+574) and Voronezh (+546) regions. In total, since March last year, the infection has been detected in more than 7.4 million people in Russia.
As a result of COVID-19, according to the headquarters, 805 people died per day, of which 59 died in Moscow, 56 in St. Petersburg, 9 in the Moscow region. The number of deaths from coronavirus exceeds 800 for the sixth day in a row. In total, 203,900 patients with COVID-19 have died since the start of the pandemic.
On the eve of The Wall Street Journal reported that the head of the commission on COVID-19 of the medical journal The Lancet, Columbia University professor Jeffrey Sachs disbanded a group of scientists studying the origin of the coronavirus. According to the publication, this happened due to the fact that some members of the group are associated with the non-profit organization EcoHealth Alliance. She collaborated with the Institute of Virology in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the first outbreak of COVID-19 occurred.
Sachs noted that the commission would still continue to investigate the emergence of COVID-19. Publication of the new report is scheduled for next year.
