On September 23, the deputy chairman of the board of Novatek was arrested in the United States on charges of tax evasion. According to the US Department of Justice, from 2005 to 2016, he hid information about his offshore assets in order to avoid paying income taxes.
The next day, the court released Jitway from custody on $80 million bail. According to the verdict, the top manager of the gas company should be under house arrest.
On charges of tax evasion, he faces up to 20 years in prison.
Novatek said that it had nothing to do with the process. The statement alleges that Mark Gitway has not been involved in the company's financial activities since 2014.
