Human rights activist Valentina Chupik, whom the ECHR prohibited from deporting from Russia to Uzbekistan, flew to Yerevan

The Russian authorities released human rights activist Valentina Chupik from the special detention center after the ECHR banned her deportation to Uzbekistan. This is reported by Novaya Gazeta with reference to the assistant Chupik.

On the morning of October 2, Chupik flew from Moscow to Yerevan. Her representatives have applied to the Ukrainian authorities for asylum for the human rights activist and her 84-year-old mother, who is still in Russia, but have not yet received a response.

• Chupik, who fled Uzbekistan in 2006, received refugee status in Russia in 2009. On September 25, she was detained at Sheremetyevo Airport after returning from Armenia - the human rights activist was given a notice that she was deprived of her refugee status and that she was forbidden to enter the country until September 2051.
• After the detention, the Russian authorities began the process of extraditing Chupik to Uzbekistan, but a few days later the ECHR imposed a temporary ban on this due to the fact that torture could threaten Chupik in his homeland.
• Chupik stated that they were going to expel her from Russia for criticizing corruption in the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
