Roskomnadzor blocked more than 427 thousand materials in 2021. The department received complaints about a third of them from users

From January to September 2021, Roskomnadzor blocked more than 427,000 materials, according to the department’s telegram channel. Links to a third of them - 155,584 publications - the service received from users.

Over the past nine months, Roskomnadzor blocked 166,000 prohibited materials, which were classified as “drugs”, “suicide propaganda” and “child pornography”. According to the agency, this is 42% more than in the same period in 2020.

The report notes that social networks themselves removed more than 45% of all prohibited information identified in these categories. At the same time, more often than others, the requirements of the department to block content were ignored by Facebook and YouTube.

• On February 1, amendments to the law “On Information, Information Technologies and Information Protection” came into force, which obligated social networks with a daily audience of 500,000 users from Russia to monitor and block illegal information.
• According to the BBC Russian Service, over the past 10 years, Russia has become the leader in the number of content removal requests received by Google. Since 2011, the Russian authorities have sent more requests to the company than all other countries combined - 123,606 requests (60.6% of all requests).
