The court in Kuban upheld the verdict of the deceased architect

The Krasnodar Regional Court upheld the sentence of the deceased architect Mikhail Kalyamin, who had previously been given a two-year suspended sentence in the case of calls for extremism (Part 2 of Article 280 of the Criminal Code) due to statements on the Internet. Kalyamin died on August 12, a little more than a month after the verdict was announced . Fulfilling the will of the deceased, lawyer Timur Filippov filed an appeal.

The hearing in the regional court lasted about 15 minutes. The judge ignored the lawyer's arguments, in particular the inconsistencies in the witness statements. The defender intends to appeal the decision all the way to the European Court of Human Rights, if Kalyamin’s mother wants it. After her son's death, she spent a month in the hospital with coronavirus.

• Mikhail Kalyamin was detained on November 24, 2020, he managed to inform his friends about the detention and disappeared from contact. Before this, he was summoned to the FSB, and Kalyamin’s computer was also confiscated. It soon became known that Kalyamin was included as an “extremist” in the Rosfinmonitoring List of Extremists and Terrorists. The artist got in touch only a week later and said that the security forces had threatened to arrest him, thereby leaving his 93-year-old mother, who needed daily care, without care. Under the threat of arrest, he was forced to sign papers admitting guilt in committing an extremist crime, while Kalyamin did not read these documents, did not know exactly what he was accused of, and did not consider himself guilty.
• In December 2020, Kalyamin was sent to a psychiatric hospital for compulsory examination. In February 2021, the architect was admitted to a hospital for re-examination. Kalyamin had only his 93-year-old mother at home.
