Nintendo will cut production of Switch game consoles due to chip shortage

Nintendo will cut production of its Switch consoles by at least 20%, has learned Nikkei Asia . Today it became known that the problem with the shortage of chips forced Apple to cut production of the iPad.

According to Nikkei Asia, citing sources, Nintendo will only be able to produce about 24 million units of the popular Switch game console by the end of the fiscal year to March 2022, which is 20% less than the company's original plan. Nintendo hoped to sell 25.5 million console units in 2021. At the same time, the latter goal was already less than the record 30 million consoles that the company was originally going to produce, writes Nikkei Asia. Now the plan will be truncated again.

Full console production is being held back by a shortage of semiconductors and other electronic components amid strong demand for the Switch, including its latest version, which was unveiled on October 8th. Due to lack of supply in September, Switch sales fell 37% year-over-year to 214,000 units, according to video game magazine Famitsu, the third consecutive month of falling sales.

• Today it became known that the ongoing global shortage of chips is already forcing Apple to transfer components from the iPad to the iPhone and, in this regard, to reduce the production of tablets. The fall in production could reach 50%, Nikkei Asia sources estimated.
