The Moscow City Court did not change the preventive measure for the defendant in the “palace case” Roman Pichuzhin. This was reported by lawyer Dmitry Zakhvatov, who, with the support of OVD-Info, represents the interests of Pichuzhin.
Earlier, the Meshchansky District Court extended Pichuzhin’s detention in a pre-trial detention center until the end of October. The Moscow City Court decided to uphold this decision.
On June 29, Pichuzhin was sentenced to two years in a general regime colony on charges of using violence against a government official (Part 1 of Article 318 of the Criminal Code). The activist is currently in custody awaiting an appeal. According to the law, the convicted person had to stay in Moscow until the appeal was considered. However, despite the fact that the verdict was appealed, Pichuzhin was taken to a pre-trial detention center in the remote village of Lyayol in Komi. Thus, he was actually deprived of legal assistance during the appeal against the verdict - Pichuzhin cannot confidentially talk with a lawyer and agree on a position in court. At one meeting, the video connection from the pre-trial detention center was so bad that it had to be rescheduled. The next appeal hearing in Pichuzhin’s case will take place in the Moscow City Court on November 9.
18:11 The Moscow City Court approved the verdict of Roman Pichuzhin, passed by the Meshchansky District Court. This was reported by lawyer Dmitry Zakhvatov.
During the hearing, Zakhvatov asked the court to issue a private ruling addressed to the head of the Federal Penitentiary Service for Moscow to stop the practice of sending convicts to another region before the verdict comes into force. Thus, the executive authorities violate the right of defendants to defense. The court ignored the lawyer's request.
The news title has been changed due to the decision on the appeal against the verdict.
