What happened at the border?

The aggravation on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan began a few days ago. Fighting broke out on the border of the Syunik region of Armenia and the Kalbajar region of Azerbaijan, which until the 2020 war was controlled by the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

Armenia and Azerbaijan accused each other of provocations.

On November 16, the Armenian Defense Ministry reported on the battles with the use of artillery and armored vehicles on the eastern border. Armenia asked Russia to help "restore the territorial integrity" of the country, and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan phoned Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Member of the Armenian Parliament Eduard Aghajanyan said that, according to unconfirmed reports, 15 Armenian soldiers were killed as a result of the fighting on the border, but the Ministry of Defense has so far confirmed the death of only one soldier. Another 12 servicemen, according to the agency, were taken prisoner.
