Gorbachev and Muratov called to stop the liquidation of the "memorial"

Former USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev and the editor -in -chief of Novaya Gazeta Dmitry Muratov called on the Prosecutor General’s Office to withdraw a lawsuit against the international memorial (included in the list of foreign agents according to the Ministry of Justice). It is reported by "New Gazeta".

The statement states that the requirement to close the "memorial" caused anxiety and anxiety in the country. Gorbachev and Muratov urge the Prosecutor General to resolve the claims out of court. They also ask the court to postpone the date of the meeting on the consideration of the claim in order to ensure the possibility of this settlement.

The court session on the appeal of the Prosecutor General’s Office is scheduled for November 25. The Prosecutor General’s Office filed a lawsuit against the liquidation of the international memorial due to the “numerous violations of the Law on Foreign Agents” - they did not market materials.

Earlier, the Council of Europe called on Moscow to stop the liquidation of the Memorial and cancel the law on "foreign agents". The council believes that the destruction of the organization will have significant negative consequences for civil society as a whole and the protection of human rights in Russia.

Academics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and other prominent scientists made statements in support of the Memorial. More than 73 thousand people have already signed in the petition “Hands away from the Memorial. A flash mob also takes place in social networks - users change their avatars to the inscription“ We ”, stylized under the Memorial logo.

• "Memorial" consists of two parts. The international historical, educational, charitable and human rights society was introduced to the register of NKO-“Ino Agents” in 2016, and the human rights center in 2014. The Memorial was one of the first NGOs with such a status in Russia.
