The book “The Russian Empire between Reforms and Revolutions. 1906 −1916 ” , published by Aleksey Miller and Kirill Solovyov, published by Aleksey Miller and Kirill Solovyev this year, was prepared on the basis of a conference, which several years ago held at the European University in St. Petersburg and attracted great attention. This is probably due to the fact that when trying to understand the problems of the development of Russia at the beginning of the twentieth century, the reader is faced with a contradiction.
On the one hand, historians talk about the dynamic economic development of our country and positive political changes. But on the other hand, they talk about the crisis of the empire, which inevitably pushed it to the revolution. How to combine these ideas? Is it possible to say that some of them are only a rudiment remaining from the Soviet ideologized science? Is it possible to recognize the possibility of a revolution in a successful, dynamic country?
