X5 Retail Group will open a smaller Perekrestok — the brand's mini-format stores will operate under the name Jam Perekrestok and be located within walking distance from offices and residential areas.
As stated in the official release of the company (available to The Bell), X5 has already begun testing the format of small Perekrestok stores with an area of up to 300 square meters. The first store has already been opened in Moscow, two more will appear in St. Petersburg by the end of the year.
The company notes that the assortment of Perekrestok Jam will be 5 times smaller than in the Perekrestok supermarket and will amount to about 3,000 items. About 60% of the assortment will be occupied by products of "fresh" categories, that is, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, ready meals, pastries and more. The store will have the same prices as in the classic hypermarkets of the network. The pilot store also has a cafe with a seating area.
According to Perekrestok CEO Vladislav Kurbatov, at the beginning of 2022, the chain plans to open 4 more small format stores in Moscow, and then it will “make a decision on the possible scaling of the project.”
Analysts polled by Kommersant call Perekrestok's mini format promising: according to Marat Ibragimov, senior analyst at Gazprombank, small convenience stores, online and specialized retail will grow faster than the market in the near future. Mikhail Burmistrov, general director of Infoline-Analytics, agrees with him - he told the newspaper that formats with a high share of culinary, fresh categories and a cafe area are already actively developing supermarket chains in Europe.
