The Third Court of Cassation of General Jurisdiction, according to the court card , rejected the prosecutor's complaint. Previously, Popov was given a suspended sentence of one and a half years with a probationary period of 2 years in the case of using violence against a security officer during the winter protests in support of Alexei Navalny (Part 1 of Article 318 of the Criminal Code). The prosecution reported that Popov admitted guilt and the case was considered in a special manner.

According to investigators, at a rally on January 31 in support of Navalny, while on Sennaya Square, Popov, “guided by a suddenly arose hostility,” pushed the security officer in the back with both hands, “causing physical pain and moral harm to the victim.”

In April, the head of the Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin , ordered an analysis of court decisions under Article 318 in relation to protest participants. He called Artem Popov’s suspended sentence “loyal” and noted that there were several similar decisions.
