In Volgograd, a follower of the Islamist movement Tablighi Jamaat was sentenced to a real prison term

On December 2, a court in Volgograd sentenced local resident Mikhail Kolotilin to 3 years in prison in the case of the Tablighi Jamaat movement banned in Russia. This was reported by the Information and Analytical Center "Sova".

The Soviet District Court of Volgograd found 51-year-old Kolotilin guilty under the article on organizing the activities of an extremist organization (part 1 of article 282.2 of the Criminal Code). He will serve time in a penal colony. The Kolotilin case went to court in September 2021, details are not known.

• According to Sova, in the summer of 2020, six people suspected of organizing a “cell” of Tablighi Jamaat were detained in the Volgograd region. According to media reports, they seized "extremist literature, as well as other documents confirming their involvement" in a movement banned in Russia.
• The international religious organization Tablighi Jamaat was recognized as extremist in Russia in 2009. According to the SOVA Information and Analytical Center, this ban is unlawful, since the association is engaged in the propaganda of Islam and has not been seen in any calls for violence.
