“I defend [former head Ivan] Zhdanov, but he did not testify in the case, so his interests cannot contradict the interests of Liliya [Chanysheva],” Voronin admitted in a conversation with Mediazona. “The recusal <...> is obviously aimed at ensuring that Lilia’s case is discussed in the media as little as possible,” he added on Twitter.

The Investigative Committee accuses Liliya Chanysheva of leading the “extremist community” of Alexei Navalny (Part 1 of Article 282.1 of the Criminal Code). The case was opened in September, and the investigation was combined with other proceedings against the oppositionist, who at the beginning of the year was sent to a colony, replacing the suspended sentence with a real one in the Yves Rocher case, and his associates.

Lawyer Voronin also said that a report was drawn up against Chanysheva stating that one of the legal entities of Navalny’s headquarters, the “Foundation for the Protection of Citizens’ Rights “Stab”,” which was recognized as a “foreign agent” in July, did not itself apply for inclusion in the register (part 1 of the article 19.34 Code of Administrative Offenses).
