Mathematicians asked to postpone Congress in St. Petersburg before the release of Azat Miftakhov

More than 60 Russian mathematicians signed a letter to the Executive Committee of the International Mathematical Union with a request to postpone the International Congress of Mathematics in St. Petersburg before the liberation of Azat Miftakhov. The translation of appeal into Russian is published on the website "Trinity Option".

Among the signatures are mathematicians of the University of Notre Dama, the University of California at Los Angeles, the Higher School of Economics and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Congress should take place in St. Petersburg the summer of 2022, but mathematicians proposed to transfer it, since Mifthi "for political reasons by the Russian authorities" is deprived of the opportunity to take part in it.

"We support the idea expressed by Ahmed Abbes and Sedric Villani, and urge the Executive Committee to do what he once had courage to do in response to repressions against colleagues-mathematicians-to postpone the international congress of mathematicians until the moment the azat will be released from the colony or his case will be revised with the full observance of its constitutional rights," the constitutional rights said open letter.

The letter was signed by 64 Russian mathematicians, including 19 non -public signatures, the names of the signator are hidden for considerations of their security.

• Hundreds of Russian and world scientists, mathematicians and public figures demanded to stop the persecution of Miftakhov, but in January the court sentenced him to six years of colony of general regime. The two other defendants were sentenced to a punishment not related to imprisonment, two more are on the wanted list. Miftakhov did not plead guilty.
