The European Parliament was supported by Memorial

The European parliament adopted a resolution in which he condemns the persecution and “politically motivated” attempts by the Russian authorities to eliminate the “International Memorial” and the Human Rights Center “Memorial”. Both organizations are included in the List of the so -called foreign agents.

The European Parliament calls on to immediately withdraw all the charges from the "memorial" and provide the organization with the opportunity to continue work without state intervention. Members of the parliament also called on the Supreme EU House -based Josep Boar to impose sanctions against officials involved in repressions against the Memorial.

In addition, the resolution addresses the problem of the application of laws on "foreign agents" and "undesirable organizations" in Russia. The European Parliament calls to cancel these laws and take measures to compensate for damage caused due to their application.

"[European Parliament] again declares its support for the Russian civil society and human rights activists, calls for Russia to create a clear legal framework and a safe working environment for civil society in accordance with international human rights standards," the document says.

Officials also call on the ambassadors of the European Union and EU member states to pay a joint public visit to the solidarity to the Office of the International Memorial and the Human Rights Center Memorial based on the results of the court hearings.

And the Moscow prosecutor’s office filed a lawsuit in the Moscow City Court demanding the human rights center "Memorial".
  • On November 17, the Council of Europe called on the Russian authorities to terminate the liquidation of the Memorial and, in priority, cancel the law on "foreign agents".
  • The Memorial Society has existed for more than 30 years, it was created in 1989. The main area of his activity was originally perpetuating the memory of the victims of Soviet repressions, and other historical, educational and human rights projects were subsequently added.
