The court in Ufa confirmed the sentence of Jehovah's Witnesses

On December 16, the Supreme Court of Bashkortostan approved the verdict of Jehovah's Witness Anatoly Vilitkevich. Kommersant-Ufa reports this.

On September 27, 2021, the Leninsky District Court of Ufa sentenced Vilitkevich to two years of suspended imprisonment. He was found guilty of participating in the activities of an extremist organization (Part 2 of Article 282.2 of the Criminal Code).

The state prosecution demanded that the believer’s punishment be toughened, sentencing him to seven years in prison. The defense asked that Jehovah's Witness be acquitted.

  • On October 28, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation clarified the application of “anti-extremist” legislation: the document states that actions “consisting solely in the exercise of the right to freedom of conscience and freedom of religion do not form a crime under Part 2 of Article 282.2 of the Criminal Code.”
  • On April 20, 2017, the Supreme Court recognized the “Administrative Center of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia” as an extremist organization, liquidated it and banned its activities in Russia. In August of the same year, all organizations of Jehovah's Witnesses were added to the list of prohibited ones. After this, a stream of criminal cases against representatives of the confession began.
