The chairman of the Committee on State Control, the Use and Protection of Monuments, Sergei Makarov, listed the main problems of preserving the historical center of St. Petersburg at an press conference in Interfax.
According to the official, difficulties represent the scale of the city center, the age of buildings, as well as climate.
- The main problem of preserving the center of St. Petersburg is that it is very large. This is the largest, probably historical center in Europe. <...> We have 8 thousand cultural heritage objects and 16 thousand historical buildings, which are subject to protection at least from the point of view of preserving the appearance. The city is middle -aged, of course, that our climate is not perfect.
Makarov also noted that in St. Petersburg "the times when the developers wanted to demolish everything."
