Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on the organization of public authorities in the constituent entities of the Russian Federation. The corresponding document is published on the official portal of legal information.

The law allows the heads of Russian regions to be elected for more than two consecutive terms. Now the head of the subject will be elected for five years, previously the term of office was determined by the region, but could not exceed five years.

In addition, according to the law, for all regions the general name of the position of the highest official is established - “head of the subject of the Russian Federation”. The charter of the region may also establish an additional name for this position, but it is prohibited to use the word "president".

The law is expected to come into force on June 1 next year.

Earlier, the draft law was returned to the second stage of consideration against the background of disagreement with the proposed amendments of the State Council of Tatarstan, where the head of the republic is called the president. At the same time, the State Duma Committee on State Construction RIA Novosti stated that the return of the initiative was allegedly due to technical changes.

At the end of October, the State Council of Tatarstan unanimously opposed the renaming of the position of the President of the Republic.
